🌿 Not talking: understanding or not?
UNDERSTANDS BUT DOES NOT SPEAK (speech production)
Follows an instruction correctly, but says barely a few words.
Communicates with gestures and pointing; the words are missing.
When not understood, dissolves into tears or anger.
SPEAKS BUT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND (speech comprehension)
Babbles fluently and with a nice melody, but without meaning.
Does not respond to their name, although hearing has been checked.
Has its own sounds for ordinary things, unrelated to the real words.
WHAT YOU CAN TRY TODAY (with both)
Say less, and say it slower. One word per thing, repeatedly, with no extra sentences.
Wait five seconds after a question. Children with weakened speech need the extra time.
Do not correct — repeat it correctly. The child hears the model without feeling it failed.
