Child 1 – 6 years · Self-stimulation
🌿 Hand flapping: ordinary or self-stimulation?
ORDINARY FLAPPING (passes on its own)
Appears with joy and excitement and lasts a few seconds.
The child can interrupt it when asked.
It gradually fades with age without you doing anything.
SELF-STIMULATION (it has a reason)
Comes with stress or boredom, not with joy.
The child is unaware of it and it is hard to interrupt.
Other repetitive movements appear too — spinning, rocking, humming.
WHAT YOU CAN TRY TODAY (not forbidding)
Do not forbid it, offer a substitute — swinging, pressure, a firm hug. The body gets what it seeks.
Notice what came before. Noise, a crowd, hunger, tiredness — the trigger tends to repeat.
Write down when and for how long. A few days of notes tell a professional more than a description.
